Max Gresham Texas Race Report:
MAX GRESHAM MAKES ANOTHER TEXAS-SIZED STEP WITH 12TH-PLACE FINISH
No. 8 Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) Chevrolet Silverado
> CONCORD, N.C. (November 5, 2012) - Max Gresham's trip to the Texas Motor Speedway last Friday was bittersweet. It marked the official end of his reign as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Champion, but it also continued his successful transition into the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS).
Gresham's No. 8 Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) Chevrolet finished 12th in the WinStar World Casino 350K. Coupled with an 11th-place finish a week earlier at Martinsville, Va., the Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate continued to establish a solid foundation for the future.
"While I am proud to have been the K&N Pro Series East Champion for the past year," Gresham said, "I'm also very excited about my new challenges. We've started something really special here at Eddie Sharp Racing (ESR), and we keep improving every week.
"It's been a long time since I've felt this good. I'm getting my confidence back."
Gresham, 19, started 21st at the 1.5-mile raceway. He and crew chief Chris Showalter executed a strategy that concentrated on fine-tuning their setup during the first half of the race, and charging forward when conditions were more favorable in the second half.
"Texas is a real challenge because the track changes so much from the start of the race to the finish," Showalter said. "Once we got the truck where we wanted, Max really put on a show. You could see him gain so much confidence in the final 70 laps. He was smart and aggressive with the way he worked other guys over. Just like Martinsville, our Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) Chevrolet was at its best at the end of the race."
Gresham passed 12 trucks in the final 100 miles to be the highest-finishing driver from the Eddie Sharp Racing stables. He also was the second-highest rookie of the year contender.
"We took a big step this year," Gresham said. "Things really started to click in the middle of the season when we came over to Eddie Sharp Racing for a five-race schedule. We've made huge improvements in each of our first four starts. I can't wait to keep it going at Homestead (Fla., on Nov. 16)."
The Griffin, Ga., driver turned over the K&N Pro Series East throne to Kyle Larson on Saturday. Larson clinched the championship at the Rockingham Speedway.
"I had fun winning the championship a year ago," Gresham said. "I know his sense of accomplishment. But I can't just stop now. My new challenge is to build on the success we've had and take it to the next level like we're doing right now."

Max Gresham Texas Motor Speedway Event Preview
Max Gresham, Eddie Sharp Racing head to Texas Motor Speedway with Plenty of Momentum
No. 8 Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) Chevrolet Silverado
> CONCORD, N.C. (October 30, 2012) - Max Gresham and the rest of the No. 8 Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) team at Eddie Sharp Racing (ESR) celebrated all the way home after an 11th-place finish last Saturday at the Martinsville Speedway. But once their Chevrolet Silverado was unloaded, their attention immediately shifted to the next race at Texas Motor Speedway.
"Once we got home, the entire team got right back to work," Gresham said following his career-best finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS). "We were very pleased with our performance at Martinsville, especially passing a few trucks in the final 11 laps. But Texas is a clean slate. We'll have time in the off-season to look back. Until then, we have to keep looking ahead."
Friday night's WinStar World Casino 350K at the Texas Motor Speedway will be the No.8 team's fourth of five selected starts with Eddie Sharp Racing. It's also the second of three consecutive races in as many weeks.
"It's always a challenge to turn the truck around when you're racing every week, but it's something every racer likes," crew chief Chris Showalter said. "The truck for Martinsville was built for short tracks. The truck we're taking to Texas is built for a speedway. They're completely different. That makes it more doable.
"At the same time there seems to be a little extra bounce in everyone's step this week at the shop. The 11th-place finish last Saturday really energized us here, especially since we cut a tire down earlier in the race and were way back in 26th at one point. To be sure, there's nothing about Martinsville's truck setup we can carry over, but we can take some momentum from the good result."
Gresham also was the highest-finishing Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender for the series at Martinsville.
"Right now the only thing on my mind is Texas," the Georgia native said. "We want to build on last week. Since Texas is so fast, it's really important to keep all the fenders straight. It's also important to qualify up front. The only easy passes you'll make all day are in qualifying."
The 19-year-old driver from Griffin, Ga., has one previous start at the 1.5-mile quad-oval. He started 21st and finished 21st for Joe Dennette Motorsports on June 8.
Gresham will make his final selected start of the season for the Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) and Eddie Sharp Racing on Nov. 16 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. |
