Max Gresham Kentucky RACE REPORT
No. 8 Made in the USA/BugBand Chevrolet Silverado
> Solid Effort but No Victories for Gresham at Kentucky. Finishes 23rd
CONCORD, N.C. (September 24, 2012) -It was difficult to convince Max Gresham of any personal victories Friday night at the Kentucky Speedway, especially after the No.8 Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) Chevrolet finished 23rd in the Kentucky 201.
The Eddie Sharp Racing (ESR) team qualified ninth in their second start with the rookie driver, but wound up in the garage following a mid-race accident.
"Racing is a humbling experience," Gresham said. "Every time you feel like you've figured something out, something else gets you. We had a great truck. I'm disappointed we couldn't finish the race."
Gresham had contact with Timothy Peters' truck midway into the 134-lap main event. Since the team is running a selected schedule, crew chief Chris Showalter decided to keep the ESR truck off the track for the final 72 laps to avoid any further damage to the Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) Chevrolet.
"We are not running for points, so there's no sense being out there with a damaged truck," Showalter said. "However, we made huge gains from our first race at Atlanta, so we are leaving on a positive note. I know our driver doesn't think that way, but that's normal for a driver. Max wants the very best and he's not willing to settle for anything less. As a crew chief, that's everything you want in a driver."
"I was looking to make some changes to that truck anyway," Showalter said with a smile.
Gresham had the 15th fastest time in the first practice session early Friday at the 1.5-mile quad-oval, and he was 14th-fastest in the final session. The team found a lot of speed with their adjustments before qualifying, sending the 19-year-old Georgia driver to his best qualifying effort in the NASCAR Camping World Series (NCWTS) in his young career.
"We were pretty good from the moment we unloaded," Gresham said. "And throughout the day we made it even better. We went into the race with so much confidence. I'm my toughest critic, so I hate that we didn't finish the race, and I hate it even more that when I start to figure out a track something seems to go wrong."
"I know Showalter and everyone else on our Eddie Sharp Racing team will put it back together, and by the time we get to Martinsville Speedway we will be just as fast as I was at Kentucky. We came away from Kentucky as a better race team than when we arrived. But for now, that doesn't make me feel any better. A driver is never satisfied with anything other than a victory."

It is definitely the best truck I have ever had in qualifying. (Chris) Showalter and all of the guys have worked hard to get us to a great starting position tonight. I cannot thank them enough for working hard at the shop and here to prepare us for this."

> There were no incidents involving the No. 6, 8, or 33 entries during either practice session.
Max Gresham and the No. 8 Made in USA Brand (MIUSA) Chevrolet recorded the 15th and 14th-fastest times, respectively, in the dual NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) practice sessions. Behind the wheel for this afternoon's two practice sessions, Gresham was looking to have the Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) Chevrolet "race ready" for tonight's 201-mile battle. Proof of Eddie Sharp Racing's (ESR) hard work on the No.8 Chevrolet Silverado throughout the off weeks was found when Gresham jumped up 13 positions during a mock-qualifying run in the Kentucky 201 final practice session. The Georgia native clicked off his fastest lap time of 30.823 seconds in the hour and a half session and completed 22 laps around the 1.5-mile track.
> QUOTES:
Max Gresham, No. 8 Made In USA Brand Chevrolet: "We unloaded the No. 8 Made In USA Brand Chevy pretty well. Our Eddie Sharp Racing team kept adjusting on the No. 8 to where we felt like it was tight enough to handle the speeds of the race, but also turn enough to cut a fast lap in qualifying. I feel like Chris Showalter and I have the Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) Chevy where it needs to be to be race ready. We will find out exactly what we have in qualifying."

> CONCORD, N.C. (September 17, 2012) - Although Friday's Kentucky 201 will be just the second race for Max Gresham at Eddie Sharp Racing (ESR), the newly-formed relationship is hardly taking baby steps in the final three months of the 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season.
The driver of the No. 8 Made In USA Brand (MIUSA) Chevrolet Silverado confirmed that he already feels up to speed at ESR, and doesn't consider the race at the Kentucky Speedway to be part of any learning curve.
"We are not going to Kentucky to figure a lot of things out," Gresham said. "We're going there to run in the lead pack and put ourselves in contention for a solid finish. We plan to unload the No. 8 Made In USA Brand Chevrolet fast."
Gresham will make his second of five selected starts with ESR with this weekend's race. The red, white, and blue team made its debut August 31 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway with a 22nd-place finish.
"The Atlanta race was a success because we all worked hard together to improve our team during the weekend," crew chief Chris Showalter said. "By the end of the race, Max and I had a great understanding of each other and we were able to make huge gains with our truck.
"The next step is to build on that at Kentucky. We're going to pick up where we left off at Atlanta."
Gresham, the defending NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Champion, has experience at Kentucky - both on the 1.5-mile quad-oval and on the quarter-mile. He started 19th and finished 30th with engine failure at Joe Dennette Racing on June 28. He also has three top-five finishes in a Bandolero Bandit in 2005 and four top-10s in the U.S. Legends Cars International (USLCI) series in 2006.
Much like Atlanta, the key to success at Kentucky his getting the truck to rotate through the banking to generate speed down the straightaway runs.
"Kentucky is all about momentum," the 19-year-old driver from Griffin, Ga., said. "You want to carry as much momentum off the corners as possible. We have a good idea how to do that, so we're really confident about our approach. Even though it is our second race together, we're not taking any baby steps. We've made huge gains in a very short time. I am very proud to be a part of this team"
Gresham has found success at every step during his young career. He won the 2006 Semi-Pro Legends National Championship. He completed all 1,705 laps a year ago to win the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship, capturing two wins, four poles, nine top-five and 11 top-10 finishes.
The Camping World Truck Series is his next big next step.
Gresham will return in the No. 8 Made in USA Chevrolet for races at the Martinsville Speedway on Oct. 27, Texas Motor Speedway on Nov. 2 and the season-finale on Nov. 16 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. |
